Biography
After transferring from architecture to computer science in my second year of university it became apparent I had found my lifetime interest. Architecture felt foreign; computer science felt like home. To write code and then have it compile and run was exhilarating - it still is. I am a passionate developer and this seeps into my computer science lessons, which are practical, project-based, full of autonomy and fun.
One of my strengths I feel is my ability to work with people. My current team and I have implemented and maintained a one-to-one laptop program, migrated our school to Google Apps for Education and the Veracross school information system as well as worked together to maintain the smooth running of technology in a school spanning from Montessori to grade 12. I have worked with administrators, teachers, staff and parents to implement and evaluate technological initiatives and systems. I am good at time management and prioritizing work to be completed.
I like to think I have a good moral compass. I was a member of the teacher representative committee at my current school for a number of years. One of the things the committee fought for during this time was the inclusion of a third option on the teacher intent form that allows the teacher, up until a particular date (usually early January), to seek new employment with the peace of mind that their current position is on hold. Prior to this addition to the teacher intent form the only options were 'returning' and 'seeking new employment'.
I have a strong interest in technology and how it can support deep, purposeful learning experiences. I would like to see students graduating from schools with the technological skills and know-how to be successful in school and college and to lead satisfying and productive lives. These are some of the notions that drive me as a technology director and computer science educator.
Some of my greatest achievements at my current school are:
- Transitioning the school from ICT to computer science and helping foster a student community of programmers and engineers
- Installing a digital citizenship curriculum
- Coordinating a migration from Rubicon Atlas to Google Docs for curriculum management
- Coordinating a migration from Education Edge to Veracross for school information management
- Giving workshops on topics such as WordPress, Google Drive, Twitter, internet safety and data protection
- Developing IT strategic plans
- Planning robotics tournaments and mentoring robotics teams
- Drafting bring your own device and data protection agreements, and
- A large majority of the students I have taught over the years have gone on to study computer science and software engineering at university
Outside of the computer science space I'm passionate about the environment. For the past several years I have managed a noticeboard at my current school dedicated to the effects of climate change and humanity's efforts to contain it. My wife and I often take our two daughters away on weekend trips to the mountains to give them an appreciation of the natural environment and traditional Japanese culture.
